Surgery: damage to the internal bladder sphincter (after transurethral prostatectomy- surgery performed through the penis to remove an enlarged prostate gland), or extensive pelvic surgery (major bowel surgery for cancer).

Trauma: to the pelvis or perineum [area between the anus and the penis] with injury to the bladder neck.

Neurological: disease or trauma to nerves that control the bladder sphincter (nerve changes due to diabetes, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis).

Drugs: some drugs such as anti-psychotics, antidepressants and alcohol can affect the closure of the bladder neck and result in RE.
