To be able to give pleasure to a sexual partner and at the same time to receive it, is a unique experience, and can seem like a small miracle [1] Most people are able to respond naturally and spontaneously to effective erotic stimulation, usually in a mutually acceptable relationship. But sexual responsiveness is vulnerable to inhibition- more so in women than in men. There are many factors that can disturb the desire for sex and arousal, such as physical illness or psychological causes, or social or relationship problems, drugs or stress. These factors may prevent an individual or the couple from engaging in or enjoying sexual intercourse and result in dissatisfaction.

Couples can enjoy giving and receiving pleasure and the intimacy and sensuality of sexual expression apart from intercourse if penetration is not possible due to ill health or discomfort, once performance pressures are removed. Professional help is available to assist in overcoming these problems.
