Each couple sets it’s own norms, so what other couples are doing has very little relevance. Frequency will be affected by financial stress, illness, death of a family member, childbirth, and conflict in the relationship. The desire of one partner may differ from the partner [see Difference in Male and Female Response], and it is important to communicate effectively in order to overcome problems that could otherwise result.

A recent survey of South African men and women showed that men and women respectively had sexual intercourse: less than once/month:10 & 11%; 1-4x/month: 34 & 40%; 5-8x/month: 20 & 19%; 9-12 x/month:15 & 17%; 13-16x/month: 7 & 5%; 17-20x/month: 4 & 3%; more than 20x/month: 4 & 3%.
