Definition:
Recurrent or persistent genital pain [dyspareunia] occurs during attempted or complete sexual intercourse or sexual arousal, or contact with the genitals. It occurs on the labia [lips surrounding the entrance to the vagina], in the vagina, or pelvic area during sexual stimulation and/or with penile penetration or thrusting, and causes personal distress.
Dyspareunia may be:

Dyspareunia may be:
- primary: ever since the onset of any type of sexual stimulation
- secondary: pain started after previous pain free intercourse
- habitual: occurs with every sexual act
- situational: occurs with a particular partner, position or type of stimulation.
- superficial at the entrance to the vagina
- deep in the pelvis
