The World Health Organisation defines sexual health as “a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being related to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunctions or infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. For sexual health to be attained and maintained, the sexual rights of all persons must be respected, protected and fulfilled”.
For better sexual health:
- Look after your general health as many medical conditions can have a negative effect on sexual functioning
- Get enough sleep as fatigue affects your sex drive
- If you smoke, stop, as there is a direct link between smoking and erection problems.
- Regular excessive alcohol intake has been shown to have a negative impact on sexual function. Restrict your alcohol intake to 2 drinks a day.
- Certain medications can cause sexual problems, ask your doctor if the medication he/she is prescribing for you is likely to have any sexual side effects.
- Educate yourself about sexuality as ignorance is one of the biggest causes of sexual problems in a relationship (there are excellent books, DVD’s and videos available on all aspects of sexuality)
- Be sensitive but honest with your partner about what works for you.
- Explore your body through self-touching so that you know what works for you.
- Practice safer sex.
