Definition:
Menopause is the time when monthly periods and the ability to fall pregnant stops, usually around the age of 50 [ranging from 40-59]. The process can take up to 5 years from the time periods become irregular and hot flushes start, until the process is complete - no more periods for one year, and no more babies. This is due to a natural change when the ovaries stop producing estrogen and other hormones that control menstruation and fertility. Menopause will occur after surgery to remove the ovaries.
Some women find the menopause liberating while others are distressed and have uncomfortable physical and emotional problems.
The capacity to respond to sexual stimulation is effectively retained, although the intensity of the sex response is slowly reduced with advancing age.
