Negative Effects:
Generally there is a decrease in libido and in sexual response to stimulation. Vaginal lubrication take longer and is reduced in volume, so more direct clitoral stimulation and an artificial lubricant may be needed. Orgasm is less intense, duration and frequency of rhythmic contraction are reduced. Pain may occur with clitoral stimulation and during uterine [womb] contraction.
Frequency of sexual activity declines with age: after 70 years only 1:10 couples have sex once/week, compared to 9:10 aged 20 -29 where 44% have sex 3-4x/week [2]. Frequency only really becomes an issue when there is a big difference in the desire between partners [see Differences in Male and Female Response]
Menopausal symptoms: hot flushes, night sweats, inability to sleep, irritability, reduced libido, headaches, emotionally labile, loss of energy, depression and physical changes [loss of skin elasticity, drooping breasts, wrinkles, hair loss, facial hair], osteoporosis [thinning of bones].
