Causes of problems:
- myths and misinformation imply that older people are no longer sexual
- age, illness or dysfunction of partner
- low self esteem, poor body image, performance anxiety and fear of failure
- monotony, repetitiveness, boredomwith sexual activities, lack of privacy
- length and quality of relationship, previous sexual problems
- obesity, loss of mobility and vigour, financial concerns, fatigue
- unpleasant menopausal symptoms, vaginal dryness, the skin and clitoris may feel irritable and not receptive to touch
- thinning and dryness of the vagina [atrophic vaginitis] may make intercourse uncomfortable, and if not treated may lead to pain, vaginismus and sexual avoidance
- alcohol or drug abuse
- Chronic illnesses: disability, pain, cardio-vascular diseases, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, thyroid, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, pelvic surgery, prolapse of the genitals, depression, urinary tract infection, drug treatments [for hypertension, depression, cancer], are more prevalent than among younger people.
- Age: a woman’s sexual function declines with age starting in the late 20’s to late 30’s, specifically desire, frequency of orgasm and frequency of intercourse [4].
