Dyspareunia (Painful Intercourse)

Dyspareunia in women

Superficial - Refers to pain at the entrance of the vagina.

caused by:

  1. infections such as thrush and herpes
  2. skin conditions in the vulva eg. eczema, herpes
  3. or a painful scar in the tissues
  4. vaginismus [ involuntary contraction of the muscles of the outer third of the vagina that make penetration painful or impossible
Deep - Refers to pain deep inside the vagina, or pain with deep thrusting of the penis

caused by:
  1. chronic inflammation in the pelvis
  2. cyst or tumour of the ovary
  3. mass in the tube (tubal pregnancy)
Dyspareunia in men:

This is rare in men

caused by:
  1. Genital infection
  2. Phimosis
  3. Prostatitis
  4. Peyronie's disease
  5. Cystitis
