Barrier Methods
Barrier methods are methods of contraception that prevent the sperm from getting through to the ovum.
The condom, or rubber covers the penis and is the only barrier method available to be used by males.
The diaphragm, or Dutch cap is a barrier method for females and is fitted into the vagina to cover the cervix and prevent sperms entering the cervix. It is used with a cream or jelly which contains a chemical that kills any sperm that may get inside the cap and so prevents fertilisation.
The femidom is a female condom which is inserted into the vagina and covers the labia [lips surounding the vagina].
The condom and the femidom are both barrier methods of contraception and, barrier methods for safer sex and prevention of infection by the HIV virus.
