Fear of Performance [performance anxiety]

This involves anxiety about engaging in sexual activity and fear of failure when engaged in sexual activity. The anxious watching of sexual 'performance' may make enjoyment virtually impossible and result is sexual dysfunction.

This can result in avoidance of sexual encounters, low self-esteem and relationship discord.

Performance anxiety can lead to the avoidance of sexual activity altogether. This may be misinterpreted by a partner as a form of rejection. This behaviour helps the person feel more in control and less guilty about being inadequate.

Isolated incidences or episodes such as not getting an erection or losing an erection or failure to achieve orgasm at an inopportune time may develop into a problem such as erectile dysfunction due to performance anxiety. Such isolated episodes do not mean that a man or woman has a sexual dysfunction. Other incidences that may cause performance anxiety include temporary physical stress, fatigue, tension, lack of privacy or nervousness about a new partner.

Fear of sexual performance is very common and can usually be resolved easily, especially when professional help is sought early on. The best approach to break the cycle of performance anxiety is to talk about the fears or concerns with your partner, avoid sexual intercourse for a while and enjoy sensual caressing.
