Caverject (Alprostadil) - Injection for men with Erectile Dysfunction

Caverject (Alprostadil) is penile self injection for men with erectile dysfunction. The injected drug is administered into the penis to cause erection. The drug relaxes the blood vessels causing blood to flow to the penis and fill the spongy tissue around it. The penis becomes hard and erect within 10 -15 mins and the erection may last for about an hour. If it lasts longer than 4 hours then urgent treatment by a urologist is required.

Contra - Indications:

  1. Hypersensitivity to alprostadil
  2. Conditions predisposing to priapism [prolonged erection] (eg: sickle cell anaemia, multiple myeloma, leukaemia)
  3. Anatomical Deformities (eg: angulation, cavernosal fibrosis, Peyronie's disease)
  4. Patients with penile implants
  5. Women/children
Side Effects:
  1. Penile pain
  2. Priapism [prolonged erection] (1%) - report after 4 hours!
  3. Penile Fibrosis (1%)

Efficacy:
Erection occurs in 80% of cases, regardless of the cause or erectile dysfunction.

Dosage:
Needs to be supervised by a physician.
2.5 mg - 5 mg, - 7.5 mg - 10 mg
Higher doses: vasculogenic
Lower doses: neurogenic -e.g. Spinal cord injury
