Sexual Health Awareness Week South Africa
Theme: Achieving health, pleasure and respect
11 February –18 February 2007
Message from the President
The Southern African Sexual Health Association (SASHA) takes pleasure in inviting you to participate in the first Sexual Health Awareness Week (SHAW) for South Africa.
Many people in South Africa, and around the world are unaware of many aspects of their sex lives. The secrecy that surrounds sexual activity in humans, leads to confusion, frustration and is a fertile ground to breed myths and misperceptions. People could lead more fulfilling sexual lives if they only had the knowledge.
Additionally Sex and its practices can lead to much psychological and physical pain. Medically our sexual activities can expose us to potentially life threatening diseases and can be an indicator of our overall state of health, particularly cardiovascular health.
Within the legal framework, which governs behaviour in our societies, sexual abuses are rife, both within and outside of legally sanctioned unions.
Much of this pain and suffering can be averted with knowledge – knowledge that normally is not available to the general population.
The Southern African Sexual Health Association (SASHA) strives to bring this knowledge to the population for the betterment of all.
Sexual Health Awareness Week will focus on issues related to Health, Pleasure and Respect. Information will be disseminated by means of radio interviews, the SASHA website and the SASHA helpline.
A big word of thanks to our sponsors who have generously contributed to make this event possible.
I urge you all to get involved, listen to the radio interviews, read the website, ask questions and empower yourself to live a better and healthier life.
Dr. Ezio Baraldi MD
President
Southern African Sexual Health Association
